When I was little, I became obsessed with snakes. I watched documentaries, read books about them, and even asked my mom to please get me one so that it could live in my bedroom. 

Naturally, my mom said no. She never bought me one. I can't blame her because the bedroom detail probably did very little to improve the proposal of having a snake in the house. But for me, it was an animal I really wanted to take care of. I literally invested a lot of time in trying to understand them and I would have been 100% devoted to taking good care of that snake. 

I know. Of all the animals I could have asked for, I wanted a snake. In the same room where I slept. The funny part is that I didn't even like my brother that much to share my room with him, but a snake sounded like the perfect roommate for me. Well, it made sense in a way. I have always been the black sheep of the family. I was the kid who asked for a snake instead of a dog, the little girl who played with cars instead of dolls, and the little girl who played soccer instead of practicing another girly hobby such as painting. The snake was just part of the combo. 

Now I have more sympathy for the adult receiving that information. At the time, I was only interested in getting my snake. I was fascinated by their skin patterns and how they could swallow enormous prey despite being so slim. Snakes were the first wild animals that really captivated me. That fascination is one of the reasons why I enjoy a collection with all sorts of wild animals. That doesn't mean I cannot appreciate an adorable kitten face or a pup's sweet wagging tail, okay? But I am also interested in the creatures that could eat me alive. Isn't it amazing that they can still look cute while being so wild? And by the way, a few animal memes are the perfect excuse to revisit my childhood pet negotiations.

  • I have reached the stage where I can look at animals online and have opinions about all of them without needing to find room for any of them in my bedroom. My mom appreciates that development. I hope she also appreciates that I am still bringing up the snake. 

    I am curious whether anyone reading this had an unusual childhood animal obsession too. If you did, I hope your parents have forgiven you for the request. My mother now sleeps at night. A daughter who collects animal memes is much less dangerous now.

  • I think it's hilarious to see goats standing in places you never expect. How do they even get there? Once, I went to a huge property that had a lot of animals around. It was a recording studio in a rural area. I went with my band, and we parked the cars in the open field, as there was plenty of space there. Then we went inside and spent hours recording. When we came out, there were GOATS around the cars. Some were standing on top of nearby logs, and others were next to them. It was quite a scene to walk out into. And that was the time I had to ask a goat for permission to get back to my vehicle.
